Hello New Bunion?

J here with a "bunionectomy" update. I just read the "Goodbye Old Bunion" blog, and I can't help but wonder. If the footsie face lift provides cute feet made to wear all those cute (and often uncomfortable) shoes, are we saying "goodbye" to old bunion or rolling out the red carpet for Bunion 2.0? But I digress.

The osteotomy (or so the doctor called it--but what does he know?) went well. Janna had 3 pins put in her foot and is already home resting. She has eaten, which is a good sign. The pain meds leave folks feeling nauseated, so it's good that she wants to eat and can keep food down.

I just realized that I myself have not eaten. I need to remedy that before I become cranky and my bedside manner deteriorates. But I digress again.

When we got home from the hospital, we were surprised by flowers and a Blockbuster gift card at the back door. Looks like I have a trip to the video store in my future. I just hope that I can muster the will to rent the movies she will choose. Seriously...you cannot imagine the sacrifices I am making here! Then again, that might just be my empty stomach talking!!

I've only seen one down side so far. Her crutches are uncomfortable. I don't know if this comes through in her blogging, but my wife can (on the rarest of occasions) be (just the teensiest bit) strong willed. I worry that she will grow weary of the crutches and try to get around without them, leading to weight being placed on that left foot. That's a problem.

Doc said no weight on the foot for at least 3 weeks. The weight would break the pins and prevent healing. I have completed a thorough statistical analysis that considers her personality, the lack of 24-hour oversight (and/or physical restraints), and the mind-numbing effects of lying around all day. There is an 0.0003% chance of zero weight being placed on that foot for 3 weeks.

Hence, I've decided to forgo nagging and have preemptively entered damage-control mode. Internet research revealed two keys to effective damage control: (1) a quick, compelling media campaign and (2) systems that prevent recurrence of the problem. I need creative motivational spins that make her WANT to remain supine, thus minimizing the repeated event of weight being placed on her fair, fragile foot.

That's the plan, but there is one major problem. I am an engineer with no people skills...not a talented HR spin doctor. Therefore, I NEED YOUR HELP. Any and all ideas are welcome!

John,
This is the time to practice your "Yes Dear" skill. Step into the Jimbeauxlsu Simon Yes Dear Institute For Morons That Can't Say Yes Dear Good."....Here's how it goes:
Janna: Blah, blah, blah!!
John: Yes dear.

(Later in the day)
Janna: Blah, blah, blah, boo hoo!!
John: Yes dear.

(On a dark and stormy night)
Janna: @@#$%, blah, $#^^&^, blakety blah-blah!!!!!!
John: Yes dear.

It's just that easy!!!

Look at these proven testimonials....

Iron Mike Tyson: "I realized I treated Robyn wrong and hope she will forgive me. I don't bite the ears off nobody anymore.....yet!"

Bill Clinton: "I'm looking to have further relations....with my wife...Hillda Beast, sorry dear...Hillary Clinton!"

Nick Saban: "I'm screwed no matter what I do when I show back up at LSU this Fall."

See, it's just that easy. Even you can say "Yes Dear" if you practice my steps to say "Yes Dear" at the Yes Dear Institute For Morons That Can't Say Yes Dear Good."

Tell Janna she is in my prayers for a speedy full recovery!!

I have the perfect way to keep her still. Tell that if she puts weight on her foot before the 3 weeks are up and breaks the pins, then it'll be EVEN longer before she can wear the cute shoes. Take it one step farther and give her a gift card to a fancy schmancy shoe store that she can only use once the pins are removed.

I'm not in HR either, but I would go with your pre-emptive strike idea and make sure she has a lot of activities at her fingertips that require her to stay off her feet (movies, books, magazines, etc.). I don't know if she has any hobbies, but this might be a good time to take up scrapbooking, card making, or some other craft that requires a lot of sitting. You could also bribe her with icecream and chocolate... a girl's best friend... =)

Good luck!

I hope you're feeling better Janna. I can appreciate your frustration with being off your feet for 3 weeks. I was in a car wreck when I was in high school. I broke both of my legs and my pelvis...I almost went batty laying around for so long. However, if I could make it 3 months...you can make it 3 weeks!

And...uh umm.....should let Jon take care of you as long as he's willing. How sweet!

I hope you start feeling better!

I know that a lot of people wrap towels around the top of crutches, I wonder if there's a better way. Hmm...

Don't make him get you a wheelchair, Janna!

Janna - glad all went well! the three weeks will breeze by!! and i am sure that great DH of your will be a fine entertainer and be at your beck and call so that you wont have to step on that precious foot of yours ;)... JON for tips you.....tons of great movies! a variety is a plus... some trashy mags to catch up on gossip, and/or some that specializ around Jannas fav interest (crafts, painting, home improvement etc...) ice cream always helps.... def supplies for Jannas fav hobbie and a work station all set up with a nice comfy pillow to place that precious foot on... also Janna the trick with crutches is you should hold your self up with the hand part, the top of the crutch shouldnt touch your underarm there for you shouldnt rest your underarm on the top of the crutch.. it will feel much better that way..

Well heres to a speedy recovery...

Do you have a rolling office chair? Perhaps it would be safe to roll around (and thus have mobility) but still avoid putting weight on that foot.

Wow I love the rolling chair idea...she could use the good foot to help her move it around, especially on the carpet! It might be worth investing in if you don't already one! :) I know this girl and I know she is that "teeny bit" stubborn that you mentioned!

Jon, your posts do crack me up! SO engineer....you guys are cut from a special cloth!

Thanks for the great ideas! Movies, gossip mags, chocolate, and ice cream have worked well.

Janna has been a model patient so far. Of course, it also helps that Maddie keeps her pinned down! That's right...I bribed the dog! It's amazing what a little cheese will buy you.

We have that rolling office chair, but it won't navigate the terrain well--thick burbur (sp?) carpet to hard wood floors to tile to sunken living room with transition strips between each. I just realized we have some chaotic flooring!

I also thought about the towel on the crutches, but Janna's mom came up with a better solution. Lamb's wool has done the trick. Who knew?!?

If engineer's are cut from a special cloth, it's probably Nomex (fire retardant) or burlap (cheap and functional). With all this fabric talk, I wonder if I could be the next Design Star. I bet there's a shortage of engineering influence amongst fashionistas.
